Allow the BioMendics Histology Core (BMHC) to take your project to completion. The BMHC is located in the REDIZone (Research, Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Discovery) incubator space at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). BMHC is a fully functional histology core that is a state of the art laboratory, overseen by two PhD research specialists and an experienced histology technician with ten plus years of experience in the field, and a bachelor's degree in science. BMHC prides itself in precision work and a fast turnaround time for academic and industry research, as well as the veterinary medicine community. BMHC strives to deliver every single slide in a timely and professional manner. We offer a variety of standard histology services, from gross dissection to special and immunohistochemical staining. Additionally, color slides can be digitized quickly on the Motic EasyScan. There are individual and batch pricing for projects of mass volume or repeat clients. Consider adding us into your next grant proposal or investor pitch and contact us for a quote today.

Below is a list of our base prices, along with a brief description of each service that is currently offered. Keep in mind these services are just a general description of some of the possible histological processes. If the histological service you need is not listed here, please contact us for more details. We are more than happy to discuss your histology needs and will consider every request.

*PRICES LISTED FOR THESE SERVICES ARE ALL BASE PRICES. LARGER OR MORE COMPLICATED SPECIMENS MAY RESULT IN AN INCREASE IN FEE FOR SERVICE PER UNIT.

*SPECIAL/MANUAL STAINING- INDIVIDUAL STAINS MAY VARY IN TIME REQUIREMENTS AND REAGENT COST. PLEASE INQUIRE FOR AN OFFICIAL QUOTE

ACCESSIONING/PRE-PROCESSING W/O RINSE – Specimen is received in 10% NBF, unpacked individually, logged, assigned an experiment number, numbered, and all appropriate cassettes and slides are made with the corresponding number. Unit of measure is price per specimen.

STANDARD GROSSING WITHOUT INK – Tissue is removed from 10% NBF, measured, observed for a brief description that is recorded for your records, placed in cassette(s) labeled with the same assigned number, and stored in 10% NBF for preservation until processing. No specific ink orientation is applied. Unit of measure is price per specimen.

STANDARD GROSSING WITHOUT INK SPECIALIZED GROSSING WITHOUT INK – Tissue is removed from 10% NBF, measured, observed for a brief description that is recorded for your records, appropriately sectioned for processing and sectioning, placed in cassette(s) labeled with the same assigned number, and stored in 10% NBF for preservation until processing. Ink orientation is available upon request for an additional charge. Unit of measure is price per specimen.

DECAL ONLY – Tissue is submerged in decalcification solution an appropriate amount of time based on specimen composition. Price for service will vary depending on the amount of time required for successful processing sectioning, and staining of the specimen. Unit of measure is price per block.

AUTOMATIC PROCESSING (BX, SMALL, OR DELICATE) – Following grossing, each block is transferred to an automated tissue processor and ran on a 4 hour delicate processing cycle. This cycle is generally used for biopsies, spleen, tissue cores, smaller skin punches or shaves. The unit of measure is price per block.

AUTOMATIC PROCESSING (STANDARD) – Following grossing, each block is transferred to an automated tissue processor and runs on a 12 hour processing cycle. This cycle is generally used for standard to larger tissue samples. If samples are excessively fatty they may require a specialized processing protocol that can be created and ran for an additional charge. The unit of measure for this service is price per block.

EMBEDDING (STANDARD) – Tissue blocks are removed from the processing rack following processing. Each cassette is individually opened and placed directly into tissue molds filled with molten paraffin. Blocks are then cooled on a cooling plate for an appropriate amount of time. The unit of measure for this service is price per block.

EMBEDDING (ORIENTED) – Tissue blocks are removed from the processing rack following processing. Each cassette is individually opened and tissue is properly oriented in tissue molds filled with molten paraffin according to the morphology of the tissue and the requirements of the study. Following orientation, the blocks are then cooled on a cooling plate for an appropriate amount of time. The unit of measure for this service is price per block.

H&E SECTIONING/3 SLIDES PER BLOCK – Following embedding, each block is sectioned on a microtome at 4 microns, tissue thickness can vary however. 3 H&E slide levels are automatically given for each block. The unit of measure for this service is price per block.

ADDITIONAL UNSTAINED SLIDES – You may request additional unstained slide for your staining or future staining needs. The unit of measure for this service is price per slide.

SPECIAL OR MANUAL STAINING WITHOUT REAGENT PREP – Following processing, additional slides may be sectioned and stained according to your stain request. Many of the reagents for these stains come prepared, however, if any of the reagents for the stain require preparation there may be an additional charge. The unit of measure for this service will vary depending on volume of project to provide the best price for the client.

IMMUNOHISTOCHEMICAL STAINING – Following processing, additional slides may be sectioned for IHC staining. All desired IHC projects will be considered upon formal request and a quote will be issued after consideration. Project costs will be determined by which party covers the antibody costs and provides the protocol development.

COVERSLIP ONLY – This service is available for individuals who only require cover slipping. This service is not an additional charge for standard H&E slides. It is included. The unit of measure for this service is price per slide.

EXTENDED FORMALIN FIXATION – Some fatty or larger tissue specimens may require additional formalin fixation to obtain adequate processing. Such samples will require an additional formalin as well as time in the fixation reagent. The unit of measure for this service is price per specimen.

REPROCESSING – Fatty or oversized tissue samples may require additional processing to obtain optimal slide production and staining. Tissue is run through the process cycle a second time to ensure proper fixation and dehydration. The unit of measure for this service is price per block.

SLIDE IMAGING – Completed histology slides are imaged on a Motic Easy Scan. The scanner uses a APO 20X (NA 0.65) with a 2X lens to obtain a 40X image. The slides can be scanned at normal, high, extended depth of focus (EDF), and z-stack. These images are stored on an external hard drive or USB drive provided by the client. There is a free software download for the client to use to view the scanned slides. The unit of measure for this service is price per slide. Prices may vary depending on scanning mode selection.
